Toyota . How to Charge a Chevy Equinox BatteryCar batteries may die for any number of reasons; perhaps you accidentally left your lights burning, forgot to turn the switch off completely or have a malfunctioning alternator. Whatever the cause, if you own a battery charger, you can rejuvenate your drained battery. However, if you find that the battery on your Chevy Equinox is continually dying, you should take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic for a checkup. The alternator may need repair or a parasitic drain may exist. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 12-volt battery charger Step by Step : 1 Turn the ignition off completely, as well as all accessories. Open the hood on your SUV. You will not have to access the battery itself in order to charge it, because your Equinox is equipped with remote terminals. 2 Look for the plastic cover with the large, red plus "+" sign if you own a newer Equinox. This is the remote positive terminal. You will need to remove the plastic cover to access it. Unhook the cover from the tabs holding it in place. If you own an older Equinox, the remote terminal is located beneath the fuse box, which is found at the front, right side of the vehicle. Unhook the fuse box and place it to the side. Do not unhook any of the wires leading to the fuse box. You should see the positive terminal beneath. 3 Check the settings on your charger. Some chargers can be set at different voltages and amperage. If you own such a charger, set it at 12 volts. If you can adjust the amps, the higher you set the amperage, the more quickly the battery will charge. You should, however, use a lower setting to slowly rejuvenate the battery, as this provides a more complete charge. 4 Connect the positive clip of your battery charger to the remote positive terminal on your Equinox. Connect the negative clip of the battery charger to the remote negative terminal, which is a bare piece of metal near the oil dipstick. You can also hook the negative clip to any unpainted metal, such as a bolt or bracket, in the vicinity. 5 Plug your charger into an electrical outlet. 6 Turn your battery charger on and wait. Again, exact charging times will vary depending on your charger and how severely drained your battery is. Check the battery frequently. Most battery chargers will have a gauge that tells you when the charge is complete. When the battery is fully charged, unplug the charger, turn it off and unhook the clips. 7 Replace the plastic covers or fuse box, close your hood and start your Chevy Equinox.
Toyota . How to Charge an Old Car BatteryCar batteries are capable of lasting four to six years if they are properly maintained. However, batteries that are allowed to sit for long periods of time without being charged are more likely to have their lifespan cut short. Therefore, if you have an old car battery, whether it's in your garage or still in the vehicle, it is important that you recharge it periodically. This way, you can save yourself from purchasing a new battery and the old one will be ready to use whenever it's needed. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 12-volt battery charger Distilled water (for standard duty batteries only) Post and terminal cleaner Step by Step : 1 Check your battery's fluid. This applies only to standard-duty batteries. Many old car batteries will be standard-duty batteries; identifiable by caps on top of the batteries. Simply pop the caps off and look inside the individual cells. If you don't see any fluid, add some distilled water. Add just enough to cover the bottom of the hole. It's important that you only used distilled water. Tap water will result in excessive corrosion within the battery. If the fluid level is low, the battery will not hold a proper charge. Make sure you replace the caps once you've checked the fluid levels. 2 Clean the battery's posts using a battery post and terminal cleaning tool. Since it's an old battery, corrosion may have accumulated with the passage of time. If corroded, you will not be able to properly charge the battery. Brush the posts until they are clean. 3 Check to make sure your charger is turned off and unplugged, then hook its positive clamp to the positive post of the battery. If the battery is not in a vehicle, go ahead and connect the negative clamp to the negative terminal. If the battery is still in the vehicle, you'll want to connect the negative clamp to an unpainted portion of the engine block, frame or bolt. This way, you'll avoid causing sparks which could result in a fire or explosion. 4 Check your charger to make sure it's set to 12 volts. Depending on the brand of your charger, you may have various voltage settings. After you've checked the charger's settings, turn it on and plug it in. 5 Let the battery charge. The exact time required for the battery to fully charge will depend on how severely it was drained. If the battery was fully drained, it may require up to 16 hours to fully recharge. Also, exact charging times depend on your charger and if you're able to adjust amperage. The higher your amp-setting, the faster the battery will charge. 6 Unplug the charger and turn it off when the battery has finished charging. Then unhook the negative clamp, followed by the positive clamp. *move into lower gears in certain circumstances. But instead of a manual clutch, an automatic transmission uses a torque converter and hydraulic pressure to change gears automatically. The torque converter replaces the standard transmission's clutch. The torque converter is a fluid coupling that transfers power from the engine to the transmission input shaft. It allows for smooth transfer of power and at highway speeds can be locked up to reduce slippage and improve fuel economy. Shifting in an automatic transmission is controlled by either a hydraulic system or an electronic system. Hydraulically controlled transmissions con sist of an intricate network of valves and other components along with hydraulic pressure to control the operation of planetary gearsets (see Figure 9-6). These gearsets can be fashioned to generate three, four, or five forward speeds. 421

As the engine speed changes, the pump that pumps the transmission fluid to develop hydraulic pressure also changes speed. The transmission fluid responds to the changes in pressure by flowing through the transmission at different rates. When the car is moving slowly, the pressure is low, and only the low gears respond. In Drive, as the car's speed increases, so does the pressure, and higher gears are brought into play. The hydraulic pressure drives the transmission gears by means of friction bands and plates. These bands and plates do the same thing that the clutch on a manual transmission does — they pull various gears into and out of action. When mechanics tell you that your bands need adjusting, these are the bands they're talking about. They can usually make this adjustment without taking the transmission apart.
